Transfers! Conference! and Cold!, Oct. 6, 2008

Dear Mother, Father, family, and whomever else:

I am doing great here in Dearborn Heights.  This past week was crazy.  Monday our district activity was cancelled, which was really lame, the Zone leaders cancelled it last minute and kind of stood us up, but oh well what can ya do.  Tuesday I went on exchanges with Elder Barrett, an awesome guy from Logan who is a spanish-speaking missionary.  It was fun, he's an awesome guy.  It was a crazy day- it got a bit rainy at one point; we where on bikes all day, which was waaayyy fun until he got a flat that took 1 and a half hours to fix!!!  But biking I think really makes the work more fun; you get to talk to more people just on the sidewalks and you have more energy.  Then, between tuesday and wednesday the temperature here has dropped like 20 degrees.  While before it was around 70 ish it is now usually around 50 degrees.  It just all of sudden got much colder, we wear jackets outside now.

Tony is doing awesome, he said he and his girlfriend are hoping to be married they think april 4th!! Or sometime near though.  Its really cool, because though they will be married civilly, he really is looking forward to when they can be married in the temple.  He has truly gained an amazing testimony and a new perspective on life.

Susie Milhan is still as awesome as ever, we went to conference on sunday with her and the Allens (who are her good friends now in the ward).  I'll talk about conference later.  The Days are doing well, I think that they might make it to the temple this month for baptisms!  They didn't make it last time  because they got antied, but it is great to see them coming around so that they can go to the temple and feel of the spirit.

We also taught Sis. Ford, the crazy one who speaks in tongues.  The thing is, she believes and is gaining a testimony of what we tell her, that it is of God, but she still has some of her own crazy ideas.  One Elder suggested we 'pray it out of her' haha.  We also had an old investigator call and ask us to start visiting again!  She has read and understood a bunch of 1 Nephi on her own and really is excited about it!  Its soo cool to see someone who loves the Book of Mormon.  Oh, and Sister Wheat, the recent convert, is holding on.  She is the one with a disability, and may have to have some strange sort of brain surgery soon.  She is very scared, especially since her husband is an alcoholic and does nothing for her.  But, we encouraged her, and she has such strong faith.  I feel that things will work out for her.  It is hard though, wishing you could do more for somebody.

Conference was great.  Saturday, we went to the Detroit River branch, which is the one with the brand new building downtown.  It was way fun, there were about 10 of us missionaries there(but only like 8 or 9 other members), and in between the first two sessions, we all got to go to lunch at a nice Mexican place, and one of the rich older guys in the branch presidency (his name is President Parker, from utah and here for work and a good friend of Elder Van Bibber's) paid for everyone's lunch!!  It was great, and hanging out with all the other missionaries was a lot of fun.

Sunday we went with Susie and the Allens to a different building and watched it, and luckily got fed in between sessions again because they have a potluck in between.  I was surprised how few people were there, it wasn't very many at all.  But  it still was great.  Conference is so cool as a missionary because you are mentioned so many times by the speakers, and realize they are speaking about you specifically!  I really liked the talk on Angels, the talk on Zion and being in unity, and Joseph b. Wirthlin's talk with all the great jokes haha!  And I really like all the first presidency, it was sweet to hear from them.  President Monson is the man.

Thats crazy to hear about the weather, it sounds like the exact opposite of here.  I went running the other morning and it was below 50 degrees and I was wearing shorts haha, I'm crazy but oh well.  Oh, and by 'detroit people think different' I'm not exactly sure how to explain it.  Its just lots of the people, members who are detroitians or just random people in detroit, just have an entirely different perspective and way of thinking of/explaining things.  I don't really know how to explain it beyond that.

Transfers are tomorrow!!!  I get a new companion, and some new people in the district, I'm staying put though.  Theres a chance I might help to combine our area with the one below us (we're dearborn north, they're south, we're in the same ward though).  I don't know though.  Its exciting but at the same time you worry aobut who your next companion will be, and if you'll be able to get along with them and all that stuff.

Thats great to hear about BYU, they better pick it up and keep it up because there are going to be tougher teams than Utah state.  I heard they're ranked number 7 though!!!  Holy cow!!! Oh, and you should send me some season stats on Max Hall (cameron should know how to), I hear he has been doing absolutely fantastic.  Oh, and what is Utah ranked now? I understand they've been doing well also, sounds like the past game was close though.  oh and thats great cwood beat highland.

Thats cool the cousins are coming down, hope you all have a good time!  I can't believe Lane doesn't like going to the games though, that is the best way to experience them!  I definitely miss BYU football a lot, but oh well I guess I'm doing something much better with my time.

Thats great you heard from Chad Marler's dad, Mom!  I really do hope I can serve in the grand blanc ward one day just to say I did!  And the detroit river branch is the one I just visited, though the building is new.  They used to meet in the 4th floor of an abandoned cpa building for church!  Crazy.

Well, I guess thats about it for this week.  I'll update you next week on the new companion, and hopefully be sending more pictures soon.  I don't think I'll send a ward-letter this time, but next transfer I probably will.  Any news from the ward lately?  Oh and I've heard rumors, but is Jeff thinking about going on a mission?  Maybe I should write him an ultimate 'you should go on a mission' pep letter haha.  Oh and I look forward to another package, I'm gonna start needing to get some warmer stuff to wear here soon.  I already am feeling the cold, I'm gonna start wearing some small gloves for my hands soon.

Well, thats about it.  Have a great week!  Remember the importance of baptismal convenants and the sacrament in our weekly lives!  Serve others! Read the Book of Mormon and feel of its spirit!

much love,

Elder Connor Tarek Lambert
