Winter Solstice- neither cold, nor wind, nor blizzards, Dec. 22, 2008

Mom, dad, and Family-

This past week has been cold.  Real cold.  Well, most of the week it was twenties, which isn't bad.  But Friday morning we woke up to about 8 inches of snow.  I didn't think too much of it until I realized DETROIT HAS ONLY LIKE 4 SNOW PLOWS IN THE ENTIRE CITY.  So none of the streets were really plowed.  Basically the entire day for us was just shoveling snow for people.  We drove a little in the morning and got stuck twice just trying to get out of our apartment!  It was funny.  What's retarded is we live in Dearborn Heights, and across the street is Detroit.  So our side of the street was snowplowed eventually, while the Detroit side wasn't plowed til like 2 days later!!! Ridiculous.  And none of the side streets were plowed at all.  It was pretty intense, people's cars were stuck all over the place.

But yeah snow is fun, but things got crazy yesterday.  It truly was winter solstice and the beginning of winter.  We got out of church and went to the car, and it was 11 degrees.  That evening it got down to like 5 degrees, and while tracting a guy told us we were crazy and that with the wind chill it was like -14 degrees!!  Man we are crazy, luckily I wasn't too cold except for the bits of my face exposed.  The wind was intense all yesterday though, and by the time we got in the car's temp gage read 2 degrees.

Oh and I forgot to mention, last week on Tuesday (Dec 9th I think) we had Mission Home for Christmas, where for the morning we went to the Mission Home with another district, shared some talents ( I played the Charlie Brown song which E. Orton danced to) and had a lovely lunch with Pres. and Sis. Rawson.  It was tons of fun and I only wish it lasted longer.

But not too much has happened this past week, lots of stuff was cancelled due to the snow.  We did get to see Sherry Ford and helped brighten her day, I think she may come around and come to church soon.  She is in hard times and hopefully our ward employment specialist will be able to help her get a job.  I also went on exchanges with E. Maxwell ( the one from Kyle's ward in California).  Nothing too exciting happened, but oh well.  Our one Lebanese investigator has gotten some funny scam letters from a guy calling himself 'prophet woody martin'- he asks for money donations and gives people 'free holy oil'- one of which is called 'blood of Jesus' oil.  Oh boy the pathetic phony false prophets and their silly lies to get money.  It was pretty funny to read though.

The Mission Fireside also was this past week, it was fun as a bunch of very talented missionaries performed musical numbers.  Man it makes me wish I could play guitar.  It was fun, and at the end all the missionaries sang a song.  Its always fun to see all the missionaries I haven't seen in awhile, including E. Van Bibber.

Yeah in regards to Christmas-  I did get the gloves thanks so much they're perfect, and I got the CD but didn't open it yet but since its a Christmas cd I guess I'll open it a little early.  On Christmas still expect me to call around 7 o'clock, though there is a chance I'll call earlier using a members phone- possibly as early as 4 here so 2 there- but most likely 7 (9 pm here).  I'll just call the home phone 801-262-6935 so make sure you're home cuz I don't remember anyone's cell phone numbers unless you like do a 1-day mail to me so I have a cell number to call.  but yeah it looks like I'll be calling you Christmas eve- and it should be about 40 minutes long is all.

Christmas should be good, we have breakfast and gift-opening with our ward mission leader and the other missionaries in the ward, a dinner with a family (the Villas) in the ward, another potential dinner with the Days (recent converts), and Christmas caroling in the evening.  Should be fun.  I have been blessed to already receive some gifts from ward members- candy, fruit, food, candles, and a sweet fleece blanket.

It was lame to hear about BYU, how's their basketball doing though?  Anything else good happening in the sports world?  How are the Jazz?

Well I still love missionary work, and though I haven't gotten along the best with my companion this last week of the month and transfer should be good, despite so many people being out of town and stuff.  I've truly learned a lot and become a much more responsible missionary- I feel much more confident in so many different ways.  I love the gospel and the scriptures, and the spirit and joy they can bring into our lives.  Christ does live, and we have the remarkable opportunity to celebrate his birth this time of the year- hopefully I'll be able to find a Christmas miracle this week.  All I need is enough faith!

love you all and look forward to speaking with you,

Elder Connor Lambert
